Neuroscience and architecture serving education

When we think of a classroom in a school or educational institution, the image that comes to mind is often the same: rows of desks and chairs for students arranged in parallel, facing a chalkboard where the teacher stands to deliver lessons. However, is that the best layout for the elements of a classroom? Could it be done differently? Does the physical environment and architecture of the classrooms influence student learning?

These are the questions being addressed within the framework of the INTEDU project, which combines technology, interior design, pedagogy, and neuroscience. The goal is to design spaces that contribute to the physical and mental well-being of future citizens.

The IES Josep Brugulat in Banyoles (Girona) serves as the setting for this project, where thanks to artificial intelligence and non-invasive technologies from Goli Neuromarketing, the behavior and neurophysiological reactions of adolescents have been measured in two classrooms.

The analysis has been divided into several phases, bringing together various companies and experts. In the initial phase, neurophysiological, functional, behavioral, and experiential needs were identified. A proposal was then made, and the classrooms were equipped with the necessary furniture and sound absorption, creating a new learning atmosphere as part of the second phase of the analysis.

In this second phase, each of the indicators has been measured again, and soon the final recommendations will be presented, including suggestions for both manufacturers and the school itself.

This study allows for the establishment of relationships between perception, emotional response, and the behavior of adolescents in relation to the design attributes of a learning atmosphere and their role in achieving the pedagogical objectives established by the educational institution.

INTEDU is a project led by the AMBIT cluster, the cluster for the contract-hospitality sector, in collaboration with KID’S CLUSTER, the cluster for products and services for children, as well as Mobles Grau, Absotec, Goli Neuromarketing, Eduxarxa, Elisava, and Ana Mombiedro. It is funded by the Innovative Business Associations (AEI) Program of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism.
